Cost of Living
According to the StudyPortals website, Greece is one of the more affordable European destinations for international students. Most people should live comfortably on a budget of approximately 750 euros per month. Your lifestyle and choices will decide if this budget goes up or down. Greece is part of the European Union, so the national currency is the euro (EUR). If you come from another European country that has the same currency, you won’t have to bother converting your money or getting used to different coins and banknotes. Nonetheless, the cost of living for a student can vary depending on several factors such as accommodation, transportation, food, and entertainment.
Here’s an overview of the approximate costs you might expect as a student studying at the University of Thessaly:
Accommodation
The cost of housing can vary based on your preferences. On-campus dormitories typically offer affordable options, with prices ranging from €150 to €300 per month. Off-campus accommodation, such as renting an apartment or sharing a flat, can cost between €250 and €500 per month, depending on the location and the size of the accommodation.
Utilities
Utilities including electricity, water, heating, and internet can add an additional €100 to €150 per month to your expenses, depending on your usage and the size of your accommodation.
Transportation
Thessaly has a well-connected transportation system, including buses and trains. A monthly student transportation pass can cost around €20 to €30, allowing you to travel within the city and to nearby areas easily.
Food
The cost of food in Greece can vary depending on your eating habits. Cooking your meals at home can be more economical, and a monthly grocery budget might range from €150 to €200. If you choose to eat out occasionally, expect to spend around €8 to €15 for a meal in an inexpensive restaurant.
Books and Supplies
The cost of textbooks and other study materials can vary depending on your field of study. A rough estimate for books and supplies might be around €50 to €100 per semester.
Health Insurance
As an international student, you will need to have health insurance coverage. The cost of health insurance can vary, but you should budget around €50 to €100 per month for this expense.
Entertainment and Miscellaneous
Budgeting for entertainment, social activities, and other miscellaneous expenses is important. This could include costs for cinema tickets, eating out with friends, leisure activities, and personal expenses. Allocating around €100 to €150 per month should be sufficient for these expenses.
Please note that these figures are rough estimates, and the actual costs may vary based on individual preferences, lifestyle, and spending habits. It’s always advisable to research and gather more specific information and factor in any potential changes or fluctuations in prices.
